About the Sanctuary
Step into the heart of Tafi-Atome, where culture, nature, and conservation come together in one unforgettable experience. For more than 200 years, the people of this small village have protected the sacred Mona monkeys, believed to be messengers of the gods. What began as spiritual guardianship has grown into one of Ghana’s most inspiring community-led conservation success stories.
In 1996, the village launched a dedicated initiative to preserve both the monkeys and their lush tropical forest home—while welcoming visitors to experience this unique harmony between humans and wildlife. Today, thanks to these efforts, the sanctuary thrives with over 2000 playful Mona monkeys, vibrant birdlife, fluttering butterflies, and a well-preserved forest rich in biodiversity.
The monkeys remain wild but are famously friendly—often wandering down from the treetops to curiously greet visitors, creating magical moments you won’t forget.
Tourism has transformed the village in meaningful ways. Revenue has supported the arrival of electricity, the improvement of the local school, and the enhancement of the community clinic—making each visit a direct contribution to the wellbeing of the people who protect this special place.
